Stage one of Tour Down Under was run over 141 kilometres from Clare to Tanunda.

After a high speed start, three riders, Tim Roe (UniSA), Martin Kohler (BMC Racing) and Biel Kadri (Ag2R La Mondiale) broke away and led the race for about 100 kilometres.

They were caught with 20 kilometres to go, and the decision came with a pack sprint. German Andre Greipel (HTC-Columbia) took de victory, ahead of Belgian Gert Steegmans (Team RadioShack). Robbie finished 8th.

Greipel is the obvious first leader.
