Prior to Tour Down Under, there was today a 51 kilometres criterium, the "Down Under Classic".

This race was run on 30 laps of a 1.7 km circuit in Adelaide downtown.

The attacks started immediately after the starter's shot, but the peloton allays kept control. With eight laps to go, the compact group was still compact, and no one was allowed to escape.

The winner of the first 2009 bunch sprint was our Robbie, in his new Katusha outfit, ahead of Wim Stroetinga (NL, Team Milram) and Graeme Brown (Aus, Rabobank).
