20/07/2006 - Great show by Floyd Landis in stage 17 of Tour de France

Today was the last Alpine stage of Tour de France, between Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne and Morzine, distance exactly 200 km, with al lot climbing: col des Saisies (Cat. 1), col des Aravis (Cat. 2), col de la Colombière (Cat. 1), côte de Châtillon-sur-Cluses (Cat. 3) and the super hard col de Joux-Plane (hors cat.).

The first breakaway came after 15 km, when 11 racers left the peloton. They had a free hand, and, at the foot of col des Saisies, the gap was set at 11'.

On this 1st category ascent, yesterdays looser, Floyd Landis (Phonak) started a big show. The American racer dropped all the others, and started alone to chase the leading group.

At the top of col des Saisies, he was only 3' down, and he reached the leaders 20 kilometres farther on 3’. Landis did not stop, and continued his attack. Only Germany's Patrick Sinkewitz (T-Mobile) was able to follow him towards Joux-Plane. They reached the foot of this col with nearly 7' on a first group of pursuers.

In the ascent towards Joux-Plane, Landis dropped his companion and arrived in Morzine, where Landis finished his fantastic with the stage win ! Sastre was 2nd and Christophe Moreau was third. Robbie arrived as busdriver as 62th at 52' and has still his green jersey.

Oscar Pereiro Sio was 7th, and saved his yellow jersey. Carlos Sastre is now 2nd, and Floyd Landis is 3rd. Cadel Evans remains in 5th position.
